How does it work? Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices relay the location of your AirTag to iCloud—whereupon you can open the Find My app and view it on a map. The entire process is anonymous and encrypted to safeguard your privacy. It is also highly efficient, so you need not worry about battery life or data usage.

Lost Mode makes finding your belongings even easier. Just like other Apple devices, an AirTag can be placed in Lost Mode. Then, if it is detected by a device within the network, you will receive an automatic notification. You can also configure it so that someone can retrieve your contact information simply by tapping the AirTag with an NFC-enabled smartphone—the same technology that enables contactless payments via mobile phones.

Privacy is built right in. Only you can see the location of your AirTag. Your location data and history are never stored on the AirTag itself. The devices that relay your AirTag’s location also remain anonymous, and this location data is encrypted at every step of the process. Consequently, even Apple does not know the location of your AirTag or the identity of the device helping to locate it.

AirTag is designed to deter unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your belongings, your iPhone will detect that it is traveling with you and send you an alert. After a period of time, if you still haven't found it, the AirTag will begin to emit a sound to let you know it is there. Of course, if you are with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train surrounded by people carrying them, there is no need to worry; these alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner.
